Marko (W-I): Was ist deine erste Erinnerung an Wrestling im Allgemeinen?
Debbie Keitel: Meine erste Erinnerung an das Wrestling waren die VHS-Kassetten meines Vaters. Er liebte Roddy Piper, und wenn er in Großbritannien unterwegs war, kaufte er regelmäßig Videos und brachte sie mit, die wir uns dann gemeinsam ansahen. Einer seiner Lieblingsfilme war They Live. Er war besessen davon.
Marko (W-I): Wie bist du zum professionellen Wrestling gekommen?
Debbie Keitel: Ich arbeitete in New York als Rundfunkjournalistin und traf Mick Foley auf einer Convention. Wir kamen ins Gespräch über Wrestling, und er erwähnte, dass es in Irland eine Wrestling-Schule gibt. Als ich wieder nach Hause zog, konnte ich nicht aufhören, daran zu denken, und so beschloss ich, es zu versuchen. Seitdem habe ich nicht mehr aufgehört.
Marko (W-I): Du hast dein Debüt im Alter von 28 Jahren gegeben, heutzutage nennt man das einen Spätzünder. Wie kommt es, dass Sie nicht früher eingestiegen sind?
Debbie Keitel: Wer nennt das so? Ich hasse diese Aussage irgendwie. Das Alter sollte überhaupt kein Faktor sein. Ich könnte mir nicht vorstellen, diese Reise mit 18 oder 19 Jahren anzutreten. Ich hätte nicht eine Sekunde durchgehalten. Ich bin froh, dass ich erst spät damit angefangen habe, denn schließlich geht es hier um ein Geschäft, und man muss in der Lage sein, sich professionell zu verhalten und einen hohen Standard zu halten, und ich denke, das kommt mit der Zeit und der eigenen Entwicklung. Ich bin froh, dass ich schon etwas Lebenserfahrung hatte, bevor ich angefangen habe.
Marko (W-I): Wer waren die einflussreichsten Menschen in deiner Karriere?
Debbie Keitel: Victoria, Ivory und Devil Masami haben mich stark geprägt. Ich hoffe, dass ich eine lange Karriere wie sie haben werde. Auf Independent-Ebene schaue Ich persönlich zu Lana Austin auf. Sie hat sich ihren eigenen Weg gebahnt und sich ein Leben geschaffen, das zeigt, dass man keinen Vertrag benötigt, um eine professionelle Vollzeit-Wrestlerin zu sein. Ihre Arbeitsmoral ist unübertroffen, und deshalb ist sie eine der Besten der Welt.
Marko (W-I): Wie würdest du deinen Wrestling-Stil und deine Persona für Leute beschreiben, die dich bislang nicht gesehen haben?
Debbie Keitel: Ich bin eine großmäulige, modebewusste, Kaffee trinkende Chefin mit Schlägen, die so spitz wie meine Wangenknochen sind.
Marko (W-I): Du bist nun schon seit einigen Jahren eine feste Größe bei Pro Wrestling EVE. Was ist deiner Meinung nach der Vorteil einer rein weiblichen Promotion?
Debbie Keitel: Bei einer reinen Frauen-Wrestling-Promotion können wir das Wrestling mit anderen Augen betrachten. Wir sind nicht mehr die besondere Attraktion auf einer reinen Männerkarte. Wir können die Show auf das Hauptereignis hin aufbauen, unsere Geschichten erzählen und einfach Wrestlerinnen sein, so wie es überall sein sollte. Bei Eve sehen wir uns nicht als „weibliche Wrestlerinnen“, wir sind einfach nur Wrestlerinnen, schlicht und einfach.
Marko (W-I): Was sind die Schattenseiten?
Debbie Keitel: Es gibt keine.
Marko (W-I): Du bist vor allem als Single-Sensation bekannt, aber du bist auch die amtierende EVE Tag-Team-Championesse zusammen mit Anita Vaughan. Wenn du dich zwischen Einzel- und Tag-Wrestling entscheiden müsstest, was wäre es?
Debbie Keitel: Tag Team Wrestling wird immer etwas sein, das mich wirklich begeistert. Es ist der Grund, warum ich überhaupt erst zum Wrestling gekommen bin.
Marko (W-I): Was läuft da eigentlich in Irland? Warum hat die irische Frauendivision im Vergleich zu anderen Ländern eine so dichte Qualität (Becky, Lyra, Martina, Myla, Anita….) ?
Debbie Keitel: Vergessen wir nicht Katey Harvey, ohne sie gäbe es keine Lyra, Debbie oder Anita. Ich glaube, unsere Arbeitsmoral ist unübertroffen. Wir wurden alle als Ringerinnen ausgebildet, nicht als „Frauen-Ringerinnen“. Wir wurden auf den Matten und im Ring trainiert, genau wie die Männer. Ich werde immer sehr dankbar für die Ausbildung sein, die ich erhalten habe. Die Iren müssen hart arbeiten, um außerhalb dieses Landes wahrgenommen zu werden. Ich bin jetzt an einem Punkt angelangt, an dem ich kaum noch in Irland ringe, so sehr bin ich in ganz Europa beschäftigt. Man muss es wollen, man muss bereit sein, alles zu tun, was nötig ist.
Marko (W-I): Gibt es Mädels, auf die wir in den nächsten Jahren ein Auge haben sollten?
Debbie Keitel: Alle Augen sollten im Moment auf Celine gerichtet sein. Sie hat die französische Szene dominiert, aber nur wenige wissen, dass sie nach Irland gezogen ist, um zu trainieren und sich zu verbessern. Nicht viele Leute würden das tun. Sie hat eine unglaubliche Arbeitsmoral und ich glaube, sie wird ein großer Star werden.
Marko (W-I): Du hast noch nie in Deutschland gerungen. Was sind deine Erwartungen?
Debbie Keitel: Ich freue mich darauf, endlich mein Debüt in Deutschland bei einer der angesehensten Promotions der Welt zu geben. Meine Erwartungen sind hoch, denn ich beobachte die deutsche Szene schon seit Jahren und der Talentpool ist unglaublich. Ich kann es kaum erwarten, mit dem Team zusammenzuarbeiten und von einigen der Besten der Welt zu lernen.
Marko (W-I): Du warst ja schon in Japan, aber gibt es noch andere Ziele, an denen du unbedingt ringen möchtest?
Debbie Keitel: Auf jeden Fall, ich würde gerne in Amerika, Kanada, Ungarn, Polen, Mexiko, Bolivien ringen… es gibt so viele Ziele. Ich möchte überall wrestlen!
Marko (W-I): Neben deiner Rolle als aktiver Leistungssportlerin bist du auch Trainerin, was gefällt dir am meisten an deinem Job als Coach?
Debbie Keitel: Aufgrund meines Wrestling-Terminkalenders in diesem Jahr ist meine Rolle als Trainerin leider etwas in den Hintergrund getreten. Aber ich stehe den Leuten immer zur Verfügung, um ihnen zu helfen, wenn sie es brauchen. Wenn ich als Trainer tätig bin, ist das wirklich eine sehr lohnende Erfahrung. Ich liebe es, Menschen zu helfen, und ich möchte, dass jeder Erfolg hat. Ich denke, wenn man ein bestimmtes Niveau erreicht hat, ist man dafür verantwortlich, diese Fähigkeiten an andere weiterzugeben. Wir sollten uns alle gegenseitig helfen, das sind wir dieser unglaublichen Szene schuldig, die wir geschaffen haben.
Marko (W-I): Was sind deine beruflichen Ziele, die du bisher nicht abgehakt hast?
Debbie Keitel: Ich nehme jeden Tag, wie er kommt. Ich habe kurzfristige und langfristige Ziele. Aber ich bin jetzt an einem Punkt, an dem ich das Leben einfach geschehen lasse. Was für mich bestimmt ist, wird nicht an mir vorbeigehen. Wenn ich weiterhin hart arbeite, weiß ich, dass ich am Ende dort landen werde, wo ich hingehöre.
Marko (W-I): Was sind deine Hobbys und Interessen außerhalb des Wrestlings?
Debbie Keitel: Ich liebe Mode, Musik und Film. Wenn ich nicht wrestle oder wenn ich mich ablenken will, verliere ich mich gerne in allem, was mit Kunst und Kreativität zu tun hat.

Marko (W-I): What’s your first memory of wrestling in general?
Debbie Keitel: My first memory of wrestling would have been from my father’s VHS tapes. He loved Roddy Piper, and he used to pick up videos when he was away in the UK and bring them back, and we’d watch them together. One of his favourite movies was They Live. He was obsessed.
Marko (W-I): How did you get into professional wrestling?
Debbie Keitel: I was working in New York as a broadcast journalist, and I met Mick Foley at a convention. We got talking about wrestling, and he mentioned there was a wrestling school back home in Ireland. When I moved back home, I couldn’t stop thinking about it, so I decided to give it a try. I haven’t stopped since.
Marko (W-I): You debuted at the age of 28, nowadays, that’s called a late bloomer. How come you haven’t stepped into it earlier?
Debbie Keitel: Who calls it that? I kind of hate that statement. Age shouldn’t be a factor at all. I couldn’t imagine going through this journey at 18 or 19, I wouldn’t have lasted a second. I’m glad I started late because at the end of the day, this is a business, and you have to be able to carry yourself professionally and hold yourself to a high standard and I think that comes with time and self development. I’m glad I had some life experience before I got started.
Marko (W-I): Who have been the most influential people in your career?
Debbie Keitel: Victoria, Ivory and Devil Masami are huge influences for me. I hope to have a long career just like them. On an independent level, I personally look up to Lana Austin, she’s paved her own way and created a life for herself that shows you don’t need a contract to be able to be a full-time professional wrestler. Her work ethic is unmatched, and that’s why she’s one of the best in the world.
Marko (W-I): How would you describe your wrestling-style and persona to people who haven’t seen you wrestle before?
Debbie Keitel: I’m a loud mouth, fashion forward, coffee drinking boss with strikes as sharp as my cheekbones.
Marko (W-I): You’ve been a mainstay for Pro Wrestling EVE for several years now. What is the advantage of an all-female promotion in your opinion?
Debbie Keitel: With an all women’s wrestling promotion, we get to look at wrestling differently. We’re no longer the special attraction match on the all male card. We get to build the show towards the main event, tell our stories and just be wrestlers, which is how it should be everywhere. With Eve, we don’t look at ourselves as “female wrestlers”, we’re just wrestlers, plain and simple.
Marko (W-I): What are the downsides?
Debbie Keitel: There are none.
Marko (W-I): Most commonly you’re known as a singles‘ sensation, but you’re also the reigning eve tag team champion together with Anita Vaughan. If you had to choose between singles and tag wrestling, which would it be?
Debbie Keitel: Tag team wrestling will always be something I’m really passionate about. It’s the reason I became hooked on wrestling in the first place.
Marko (W-I): What’s the deal about Ireland? Why does the irish women’s division have such a dense Quality compared to other countries?
Debbie Keitel: Let’s not forget Katey Harvey, without her there would be no Lyra, Debbie or Anita. I believe our work ethic is unmatched. We were all trained to be wrestlers, not “Women’s Wrestlers”. We were trained on the mats and in the ring, just like the men. I will always be so grateful for the training I have recieved. The Irish have to work hard to be seen outside this country. So much so, I’m at a point now where I barely wrestle in Ireland anymore, I’m so busy across Europe. You have to want this, you have to be willing to do whatever it takes.
Marko (W-I): Any Gals we should have an eye on in the upcoming years?
Debbie Keitel: All eyes should be on Celine right now. She has been dominating the French scene, but not a lot of people know she moved to Ireland to train and better herself. Not many people would do that. She has an incredible work ethic and I think she’s going to be a big star.
Marko (W-I): You’ve never wrestled in Germany before. What are your expectations?
Debbie Keitel: I’m excited to finally make my debut in Germany for one of the most respected promotions in the world. My expectations are high because I’ve watched the German scene for years and the talent pool is incredible. I can’t wait to work alongside the team and learn from some of the best in the world.
Marko (W-I): I mean, you’ve been to Japan, but are there any other destinations you eagerly want to wrestle in?
Debbie Keitel: Absolutely, I would love to wrestle in America, Canada, Hungary, Poland, Mexico, Bolivia… there are so many destinations. I want to wrestle everywhere!
Marko (W-I): Besides your role as an active performer, you’re also a trainer, what do you like most about the job as a coach?
Debbie Keitel: Due to my wrestling schedule this year, my role as a coach has unfortunately been put on the back burner. But I’m always available to people to help them if they need it. When I do get to coach, it truly is the most rewarding experience. I love helping people, I want everyone to succeed. I think if you get to a certain level, it is your responsibility to pass those skills on to others. We should all be helping each other, we owe it to this incredible scene we have created.
Marko (W-I): What are your career goals, you haven’t ticked off the list already?
Debbie Keitel: I take every day as it comes. I have short-term goals and long-term goals. But I’m at a point now where I’m just letting life happen. What’s meant for me won’t pass me. If I continue to work hard, I know I will end up where I’m supposed to be.
Marko (W-I): What are your hobbies and interests outside of wrestling?
Debbie Keitel: I love fashion, music, and film. When I’m not wrestling or if I need an escape, I love to get lost in anything artsy or creative.
